SINGAPORE - Sometimes just having a "great personality" will not get you a date as easily as having "a face you could stare at all day and a body you want to touch all night".
That's why I, intrepid reporter with a "great personality", went to meet Jonathon, Leigh, Sam and Ben, four members of the male revue troupe Thunder from Down Under, who begin their week-long stint at Zirca tomorrow.
The beefcake dancers are professionals in the art of flirting and I can guarantee you that none of them has had to resort to cheesy pickup lines to get a date for Valentine's Day.
Started 10 years ago, Thunder from Down Under have performed in 15 countries and made fans of 6.5 million women. But don't jump to conclusions that they're just a male strip show. "No, we're not your typical, sleazy, hump-and-grind show that's just going to, er, show you a few things," Leigh said.
"There is a stigma about a male strip show," added Ben. "But we're not that at all. People can't understand until they see it. (Then they say) 'Wow, that was amazing, it's not what I expected at all.'"
At any rate, 6.5 million women can't all be wrong, right? So forgive me if I thought being part of their revue would be a surefire way to get women flocking my way. Just what does it take to be in Thunder from Down Under? The guys give their tips.
BE NORMAL
"We're just the guys next door, really. We're not born to be strippers," said Leigh, 30, who used to be a pro beach-volleyball player. Ben, 23, was a personal trainer, 26-year-old Jonathon used to play rugby before he worked as a sales consultant for a health club, while Sam, 28, managed a cattle and sheep farm.
BE FIT
Sam: "You have stay in shape, although we don't have a set regimen. We don't all train together. We all train, but at our own timing — an hour a day, five days a week."
Leigh: "It's all down to diet. It's very important. You lose your six-pack, you're suspended. If you have too much Burger King or McDonald's, that’s it."
Jonathon: "Still, the show itself keeps you fit, because it's 75 minutes of high-intensity cardio."
HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE
Ben: "We're all normal guys with a passion to entertain. You can't learn a quality like that. It's just your mindset."
Jonathon: "Sometimes it's hard to keep motivated, but you've got to look at the positives and realise you’re overseas and travelling the world with a good bunch of guys."
Sam: "At the end of the day it's still an easy job. It's not like we're digging holes in the ground for 10 hours in the hot sun. It's so much easier than a normal day's work."
BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING
Ben: "I got tackled by an old lady once. She came up all excited and just grabbed on. She had to be pried off!"
Jonathon: "There're always wardrobe malfunctions going on. Sometimes things come off that shouldn't come off! And in the crowd, sometimes the women grab things they shouldn't. But you learn to sense trouble and you just avoid it."
BE HUMBLE
Ben: "When you're cocky and arrogant, the girls will sense it and the guys won't respect you. And that's it, you’re gone! There's really no room for that here.
"I think it's about being humble and appreciating how lucky we are to be doing what we're doing."
Thanks guys. I'll work at that fitness thing, but four out of five isn't bad, right? Right?
Thunder from Down Under perform at Feb 14 to 21 at Zirca at Clarke Quay.
