LONDON (AFP) - – Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe believes his side can last the pace in the race for a top four finish after they moved into the Champions League spots with a 2-0 victory over West Ham on Monday.
Harry Redknapp's men moved above Aston Villa into fourth place thanks to goals from Luka Modric and Jermain Defoe at White Hart Lane.
Villa need a win over Liverpool on Tuesday to replace Tottenham in the Premier League's top four, but Defoe is adamant the north Londoners have what it takes to claim a lucrative place in Europe's elite club competition.
"I think we're good enough to compete up there, so we're delighted with a great three points. It's fantastic, that's what we wanted," Defoe said.
Redknapp admitted a top four finish would be a remarkable achievement given Tottenham's lowly position in the relegation zone when he arrived at the club early last season.
"We would certainly settle for finishing in the top four from where we were last year. We have just got to keep going and picking up points as we can," Redknapp said.
"On the back of beating Manchester City, Blackburn and getting a point at Fulham, this is another good result. It's been a terrific Christmas."
Although Tottenham have a golden chance to claim a Champions League place, Redknapp ruled out any major moves to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.
"We have got good options and they are all playing well. That is the fourth clean sheet on the spin and it's great for us," Redknapp added.
"I haven't even got anyone in mind. We are supposed to be in for so many different players, but I've got a good squad here and sometimes you can cause yourself more problems if you bring someone in."
West Ham remain in relegation trouble after a defeat marred by the first half departure of key midfielder Scott Parker with a recurrence of his hamstring problem.
Hammers manager Gianfranco Zola said: "We can only be strong and try to get round this problem - that's all we can do.
"I must say the reaction from the team for all the injury problems has been massive. I'm delighted with the performance."
Zola refuted suggestions that he was wrong to start Parker, who was already struggling with the injury before the match.
"It's pointless now to say I should or shouldn't have done," he said. We decided together that he was to play, unfortunately it didn't go right.
"Hopefully it's not going to be a bad thing. It's not bad damage."
